The Platte Canyon Yacht Club made history in 2019 by building a 40-foot outrigger canoe, transporting it to Tacoma, Wash., and racing in the SEVENTY48 Boat Race with 18 students and faculty aboard.
The boat finished 23rd out of 109 registered entries, stunning the boat-racing community and winning the hearts of all who witnessed the feat. News outlets across the nation caught on to the unique story, making pseudo-celebrities of the entire crew at the event. Nobody, including the students and faculty aboard the homemade vessel, foresaw such an impressive finish in a prestigious but demanding race that covers seventy miles from Tacoma, Wash., to Port Townsend, Wash. No boat that large had ever entered the race, and typically boats compete with four or fewer people aboard. To say the Platte Canyon vessel was an unusual entry into the race would be an enormous understatement, to say the least. http://www.theflume.com/free_content/ar ... f5771.html _________________ Come see The Flume at: http://www.theflume.com |
