I am looking at getting a ductless heat pump for the lower level of my house. It gets very chilly down there in the winter. Does anyone else have one? How do you like it? Who installed it? I can find them online, but it looks like they need to be installed by an electrician. Anyone know who might sell/install them around here?

I found this informative article

I have used Tipping Hat for electrical and plumbing work on a house rehab, including upgrading service to 200amp. They did a great work for me. It may be a good idea to call and get input on best solution for you.

Thanks Ang! I have tipping hat coming out tomorrow morning! Great article too. I have done a bunch of research, but I hadn't seen that article yet. Muchas Gracias.

On a side note - Tipping Hat does A LOT of work up here. They get excellent reviews, and they specialize in heat pump installation. The owner lives off of Doubleheader as well. I'll update as the process continues. Thanks again.

Thanks, aspenleaf! So Tipping Hat said the heat pump wouldn't help me out. They said that I need heated floors. All of the cold down there comes from the tile floors on a concert slab. A ductless heat pump can't overcome the cold floors. Sooooo... my new project will be to install heated floors over the existing tile. I'll keep everyone updated. Nothing ever goes the way it should in my mind.

heated floors sound like a great idea and I assume your circuit breaker box is downstairs so it should not be too hard to run new circuit for the floors. Are you going to retile over the heated floor? We have the same issue and have installed radiant heaters, but I like this idea better.

Hey Ang! The breaker box is on the exterior of the house, but tipping hat said it wouldn't be a problem to hook up the electrical to it. The problem I'm having is that I can't find anyone who installs electric heated floors. They do exist. I've done a lot of research on them. Lots of places do water heated flooring, but I'm on propane and don't want my propane burning all the time.

Hi, Jonny. I'm not sure if it's insulated or not.

in floor heating has to go under the tile, not over! They are electric matts, that go on the slab then thinset and tile go over that.
or you can have hydronic systems where piping is run in the concrete slab, but that seems rather impractical now.

It's been a long while since I used heat pumps, but as I remember they preformed best at around 40 degree exterior temps, below that they started to rely on electric radiant coils.
Perhaps you should look into electric baseboard units?

I’m going to have the heating element installed over the existing tile. It’s too expensive to tear out. I will do a new floor over the existing one. We have 10 foot ceilings down there, so we won’t lose any space.
