I have done this many times and you're on the right "track". 1st,take the bus to Golden or park there in the Park and Ride. Parking is free including Park County residents in Golden. A lot of the Park and Rides charge for parking. Then take the light rail train downtown to the last stop at the bus station. Now you walk south through or over the underground bus station to Union Station and the train to the plane. Usually it takes 1.5 - 2 hours from Golden to DIA. The time on the bus from the foothills is variable. The wait times for connections is usually very short. The ticket was $9.00 Golden to DIA for the trains last time I used them. Lately I have been parking at DIA using the "Top Airport Parking" site. Their lot and service is great, close as Pikes Peak Parking, and $4.00 a day. Good luck and leave yourself plenty of time the 1st time you try this.

I do this all the time from Pine Junction and you could do it from Conifer without ever driving if you are going during the morning commute. Take the bus to the Federal Center, connect to the W light rail and then walk 2 block to Union Station to the A line. Costs $9.00. If you are doing this outside of the times that the commuter bus runs, you would have to, as the previous poster suggests, drive to Golden, take the W line to Union Station and the @ line to DIA. The W line to Union Station is about 40-45 minutes and the A line to DIA is 35 minutes. It leaves Union Station every 15 minutes.

Are the return trips the same times (roughly for frequency on the rail) and cost?

The A-Line runs every 15 minutes to and from DIA. There are discounts if you are a senior. There is also an App called RTD tickets that you can use to purchase tickets.
