A .177 caliber pellet rifle and BBs. It won't break the skin and apparently doesn't hurt all that much since they only run 10-20 feet the first time. A second shot is often necessary. They don't like it, but they learn to avoid the area. They can eat hundreds of dollars worth of flowers if left alone. They show signs of being fed around here, and that makes them more of a headache. Don't use pellets. They're pointed and hit harder.

A neighbor has a motion sensing sprinkler. It works really well.

We do. It is extremely effective. Just reapply after every 2 rain falls or once a month.
Ingredients:
One egg
2 cloves of garlic
Cayenne pepper (powdered)
2 cups milk

Blend the above ingredients in your blender
Pour into a small pump sprayer while straining out any chunks (I use an old sock)
Add water to make about 1 gallon

It is effective right out the gate, but if you really want to make it work, leave it outside for a few days and then spray. I usually make 1 gallon at a time and that will last me several applications.

Easy..... human urine. It's great for ALL wildlife. Spray it around bottoms of plants, trash cans, around any area you want protected. Have hubby take care of the dirty deed into a milk jug.

Are you kidding me - a pellet rifle and electric fence - we live in Colorado, we have invaded their space - they HAVE NOT invaded ours, you move to the mountains for the beauty and the wildlife - WHY would you want to kill it, hurt it or keep it out of YOUR space, why not let it roam free as intended. If you want to put a fence around something put it around your flowers or bush or whatever.

Has anyone tried making your own deer repellent? If so, how did it work?

I'm about to try my first recipe. I researched the net and here are the two best pages that I found:

Deer Repellent Recipes You Can Make Yourself

GardenWeb

Combining several recipes, this is what I'm using:

2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 very, very dried hot peppers
2 cloves of garlic
1 tsp dish detergent
Enough water to make one gallon

I used the hot peppers because I don't have any Tobasco or hot sauce.

First, I soaked the very, very hot peppers in boiling water to soften. I also added the garlic cloves, sliced thinly.

Then I put the peppers, garlic cloves, the cooled water, eggs, milk, and dish detergent into a blender and liquified it.

I'm letting it settle for a while. Then, I'll strain it very well, add enough water to make a gallon, and spray my plants. I'll let you know how it works. The deer are already eating all my rock garden plants and they're barely out of the ground yet.

This is an old post of mine. The recipe is similar to one sstatham posted above. This does work for me quite well but, as sstatham noted, it has to be sprayed again after a rain or two.

Male urine works for golden mantle ground squirrels and chipmunks but not rabbits or deer, in my experience.
