Ingredients:

vegetable oil
1 1/2 c cornmeal
1/2 c flour
1/4 c shortening
1 c milk (or beer)
2 T finely chopped onion

2 t baking powder
1 t sugar
1 t salt
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t cayenne pepper
1 egg

Cooking Instructions:

Heat oil in a Dutch oven to 375 degrees.

Mix remaining ingredients.

Drop by teaspoonfuls into hot oil. Fry, turning once, until golden brown, about 1 minute; drain.
