Ingredients:
1 pound lean flank steak, sliced paper thin
1 cup oil
2 tablespoons flour
2 leeks, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
? teaspoon powdered ginger
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/8 teaspoon ground anise
? cup beef broth
1 tablespoon cornstarch solution.
Marinade:

3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon sake, (or sherry)
Cooking Instructions:
Blend the marinade ingredients together in a deep bowl. Add beef and mix well to coat. Cover and let stand 1 hour.

Heat oil in wok over high heat. Remove beef from marinade, drain, and pat dry with a paper towel. Sprinkle the beef with flour and add to the hot oil. Deep-fry for 3 minutes, remove and drain. Set aside and keep warm.

Remove the oil from the wok except for 4 tablespoons. Add the leeks and garlic, and stir-fry 5 minutes. Add the meat back to the wok. Add ginger powder, soy sauce, anise, and beef broth. Cover and simmer for 1 hour over very, very low heat. At the end of cooking, quickly bring to a boil, add the cornstarch solution, and stir until the sauce is thick and bubbly. Serve immediately with rice.
