This is a very simple recipe that doesn't should too appealing, but it has never had a proper name to my knowledge so we just call it "goolash" or "glop." It doesn't require much much measuring at all and you can experiment with it until you find the mixture you like. You can add more of this or that to suit your tastes. Anyway, despite the open ingredients list, I have never had a bad batch of this stuff. My mom used to make it for my sister and I when we were kids and it remains our favorite dish to the day, even more so that good old plain mac-n-cheese.
Brown the hamburger with some of the chopped onions and garlic. Try to keep the hamburger together in about 1 inch chunks. Drain off the fat and set aside. Boil macaroni until almost done, remove from heat and drain. Place back in pot with a little milk and a small amount of butter. Stir to coat the macaroni. Add the cheese a little at a time and then the tomatoes (drained) and the rest of the onions and hamburger. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir until the cheese melts; break up the tomatoes with the spoon to reduce the size of the chunks. You can add all the liquid from the tomatoes and the macaroni will eventuallysoak it up. This is a great quick meal on a cold winter night and kids generally love it. You can add diced green peppers, chili peppers, zuchini, eggplant or whatever else suits you to the mix. |
