What do you use to tie bundles of slash together? Elk Creek Fire will be coming through the neighborhood soon. I've always used wire to hold them together, but wouldn't chipped metal wire be bad?

You don't bundle them. You just lay them out, butt ends out, long and low.

Pile Guidelines

Piles must be stacked by 8 a.m. on the scheduled chipping day.
Chipping will take place Monday through Friday.
Improperly stacked piles, and any piles stacked after 8 a.m, may not be identified or collected.
Stack piles neatly (no bags), with the large ends of branches facing the road.
Place piles within 5 feet of the roadway, but not touching the road or in drainage ditches.
NO piles on or in driveways, piles must be on a roadway accessible to the crew and equipment.
Maximum pile size is 5 'x 5' x 5'. There is a 15-pile limit per address for each sign up period.
Maximum acceptable material diameter is 10".
After crews have removed your pile, clear away any remaining branches, needles and debris.
Do not combine piles with neighbors' piles or place piles in other neighborhoods.
NO piles that have been created by any machinery.
Piles that have rocks, dirt/debris, trash, or root wads will NOT be chipped.

I was wondering how people were notified to register for the slash pickup. We used to get an email and were able to sign up, but we didn't receive one this year and missed the sign up.

We signed up the first year. I went to town on our property and had our cul-de-sac completely lined with slash piles.... from April to October. I finally contacted them as we only had one more Jeffco slash day and I needed to get the slash out of the way for the snow plows (yes it was OFF the road, but we are end of cul-de-sac and they PUSH it off the road and it would be just a huge mess the next spring.

They came and chipped it all that Saturday, but did not take care of the other house on our road that had slash out.

Never again. Their main job is fire fighting and while I appreciate the gesture, it is simply not worth having the slash around ALL summer and maybe not even getting chipped.

With the new Jeffco Slash schedule this year, it is easier than ever to just take it to the slash sites. They are running from Thursday-Sunday at the same location all month. Very smart way they are doing it this year.

Thanks, Angela. The slash pickup has worked well for us and our situation. I have seen neighbors slash piles sit for a season, I assume waiting for the pick-up that never came, but where we pile the slash, it doesn't get in the way of the plows. We don't have a vehicle to take our slash to the chipping station, so it's just more convenient to take it to the curb. What I really wanted to know, for anyone who had signed up this year, is how you knew to sign up. I typically receive an email or see it in the fire department email. This year I missed it and the sign-up was already closed.

I got notice on my neighborhood's FB page. I went to the Elk Creek FD site and signed up many months ago. It's wonderful service, but they have a limit on how many homes they can do.

The Elk Creek/InterCanyon Fire Protection Districts' Chipping Program signup was in February 2022. There were fewer slots available this year and the slots filled up quickly. My suggestion would be to check their website next year to see when the signup starts.

If you can tell me which neighborhood you live in, there may be an Elk Creek/InterCanyon Fire Protection District Community Ambassador Volunter who could help you with resources. Here's a link where you can also look to see if there is an Ambassador for your neighborhood.
